French Connection?
My grandmother's maiden name is Neal and kinsmen lore has it that the name is French in origin. Supposedly, the original name was De Carneal (or some change of that spelling). During the French Revolution a family of brothers definite to flee France.
I've reputedly got a Marquis De Le Granae (spelling very uncertain) who fled to Ireland to sidestep decapitation, and thence to Quebec. Unfortunately, I have yet to prove this piece of relations lore, though I do have these French lines back to the 1850s.
